I suppose most people look upon an executioner as a grim sort of personage. They imagine him constantly haunted by the spectres of men he has killed on behalf of the law, and a man who can’t smile at a joke even if he wanted to.

Those popular conceptions are wrong. At any rate, I myself always saw that I got as much fun out of life as possible, and can assure you that it would not have been possible to find a more entertaining companion than Jim Billington.

Jim was always up to some mischievous prank. Often enough his practical jokes cost him something for ‘repairs,’ but he always acted in the most generous fashion so that his victims should not suffer by his jokes at their expense.
